London Fields Brewery, Feast In the Fields, Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen, Rotary, Balthazar, Vinn Goute…
So I have tallied up a backlog of over 4,000 pictures on my I Phone that are all to do with food… and I’m going to share some of these with you guys, so I can show you what I’ve been eating in and around London recently..
This weekend saw Yummy Choo have a stall at London Fields Brewery at Feast in the Fields selling our Mauritian bananas with Green Island Spiced Rum, Mauritian Vanilla served on brioche and with cream or coconut crumble! The other cake was our Pudine Mais ( polenta, sultana and coconut pudding)
Other street food vendors there included Otomaomorte serving up their cheesy goodness of Morbier melted cheese on potatoes, served with pickles and mustard (these guys truly are the dark knights of cholesterol) but you can’t fault a comforting dish, delicious!
Mei Mei Street Food Cart, was another new one to me, trying out their Jian Bing chinese crepe, watching them make it straight in front of you, with a crepe base, egg scrambled over, chilli sauces, char sui pork slices, a large wonton cracker placed over and the crepe folded over this into a neat little package. Amazing, great texture from the wonton and the pork and sauces were addictive!
Last Friday saw myself and Carib Gourmet take a trip down to Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen finally! It was a while coming, but we successfully made it down to Pipsdish in Islington where Zoe was taking over for the night! It was a great evening, with some Azonto dancers showing us how to groove.. we started with a palm wine ceremony, then the starters of yam balls , scotch bonnet salsa with delicious poached tilapia with a hint of ginger and chilli flakes mixed with fresh garden spinach. The plantain salad was lovely as I would not of thought to have it like this, the mains came out in intervals, with peanut butter lamb stew, tender lamb, slow cooked in a tomato scotch bonnet sauce was the winner aswell as the sardines dish and the (non greasy!) spiced jollof rice. Well done Zoe! A great first taste of Ghana…
As Monday was a lovely bank holiday day, at Yummy Choo HQ we organised a beautiful picnic, with homemade falafel using fresh parsely, chives, ground chickpeas, cumin, cayenne pepper, garlic and onion, rolled into balls, flattened and fried till crispy. Accompanied with a herb cous cous with pinenuts and feta cheese with a orange and tomato salad!
Headed to the Rotary Diner over the weekend after a Circus skills training class, needing some sustenance! I ordered the Cornish Day Boat, with beef dripping chips and we also had the BBQ chicken with jalapeno cornbread, pickles and the rest. I was looking forward to my meal after all that hard work!
You could not falter the Cornish cod, cooked perfectly on green sauce which was a tad bit salty. The BBQ chicken was juicy and tasted great, but the cornbread muffins were a bit of a let down, with not being able to taste much of the jalapeno! The crab cakes were packed full of crab as you would expect, but I could of eaten more than just the two… For the price you paid I hoped to expect more from the dishes, unfortunately the Ribmans Holy Fuck sauce was probably the most exciting thing about this meal!
If ever in Covent Garden I always wonder over to Balthazar shop next to the restaurant, gawk at their pastries and salads.. here a perfect breakfast option, buttery and delicious!
A couple of weeks back I visited Vinn Goute’s first ever supperclub on a boat near Kew. A great location and a supperclub/pop up on a boat! How original was that? It fit so well with the outdoor style food and ambiance of the Seychelles’s inspired food that these guys are creating.
Already big street food vendors on the scene and delving into the supperclub arena, these guys pulled out all the stops on this occasion. With a tropical menu of lentil fritters, tuna samosa, scotch bonnet chilli sauces and mains of octopus curry (my favourite) and very similar to Mauritian style curry. With grilled red snapper in Vinn Goute’s secret marinade was flaky, tender fish, I could have eaten more! Accompanied with rice, vegetable curries and goat curry. The dessert finished with a banana & rum Sorbitum ice cream perched over tropical fruits in our own coconut husks.
Hope you have enjoyed my account of whats gone in my stomach over the past month, there is more!
